The Burgess Hill Bike Ride is on Sunday 6th June. Are you planning on taking part? Or perhaps you hope to give a cheer to those who take off on their wheels...and maybe you'll be inspired to have a go next year.

Cycling has many benefits, to us as individuals, as well as to our community and environment. It's great for health and fitness and is a form of aerobic exercise, which provides cardiovascular benefits, whilst avoiding high impact on joints. It's a cheap way to travel, and helps the environment by avoiding pumping fumes into the atmosphere. There is the option to cycle recreationally, competitively or as a means of commuting...or perhaps all three at different times. Cycling can boost mood, not only because of the endorphins released through being physically active, but also because of the relaxing feelings a cycle through the countryside can create. Picture the greenery, the gentle breeze on your face, the scenery...

So how would you get started? The UK's National Cyclists' Organisation has tips for beginners, from getting the right bike for you to road safety. A number of West Sussex Cycle Routes can be found here, including ones around Burgess Hill. Or perhaps you already know some great routes that you can share with the rest of us?

Following the news that Lewes MP Norman Baker has just invested in a brand new folding bicycle (no doubt taking his lead from David Cameron), can we expect our MP Nicholas Soames to follow suit?
