By Maisie28 | Friday, May 06, 2011, 20:32
The polling stations shut at 10pm last night and counting commenced today. Ballot papers were given to all registered voters across Mid Sussex to vote for local councillors as well as the referendum on the voting system.

Voting over. Mid Sussex election results 2011 are now coming in
We were asked: 'at the present the UK uses the 'first past the post system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?' We will not know the results of this vote until tomorrow.
However...according to the Mid Sussex District Council 2011 elections results pages, it would appear the Mid Sussex results are well underway with the following Mid Sussex District councillors being elected so far:
Burgess Hill Franklands - Conservatives Ian Simpson and Ginny Heard
Burgess Hill Leylands - Conservative Catherine Cherry
Burgess Hill Meeds - Conservative Anne Jones
Burgess Hill St Andrews - Liberal Democrats Denis Lindsey Jones and Graham Ernest Knight
Burgess Hill Victoria - Conservatives Mandy Atkin-Thomas and Emily White
Burgess Hill Dunstall - to be announced
Take a look at the Town Council election results and just Leylands Ward has been announced so far:
Henry Peter Barton (Lib Dems), Catharine Cherry (Cons) and Pru Moore (Cons) have been elected.

So, any surprises so far?
Comments
I found Mid Sussex Conservatives’ Chairman, John de Mierre’s comments in this week’s Mid Sussex Times amusing. He said “Our new councillors are ...... entirely rooted in their local communities”.
How can that possibly be true when the new Conservative District Councillor for Burgess Hill’s Victoria ward, Emily White, lives well outside the ward and town in Ansty? How can that be possibly true when the new Conservative District Councillor for Burgess Hill’s Franklands Ward, Ginny Heard, lives well outside the ward and town in Buxted? No doubt there are other examples within the newly elected Mid Sussex Councillors.

ReportI would like to say thank you to all of the 2,000 people who voted for myself and the other 8 UKIP candidates in the recent local elections. This represents a 1,000% increase in the number of votes we received and a 350% increase in the number of candidates that stood for UKIP this year compared to the last District Council elections in May 2007.
Yours faithfully
