The government has planned to scrap hundreds of school building programmes nationwide in an attempt to save money. I wonder if this is the first major step of our new government in making cuts within schools and I wonder what will be next? Let's hope our local schools can successfully face new challenges and change if needed.

If there have to be cuts, then I'd rather they cut building funds rather than teaching budgets. If they can save enough money by halting refurbishments in the short term, hopefully standards of learning will be maintained.

I keep hearing about how many public sector jobs will have to go but can't imagine that teachers/teaching assistants will be cut when more and more children with special educational needs are going through mainstream schools. The pressure on those teaching/supporting those children is already immense with seemingly many teachers and teaching assistants suffering stress related illnesses. Our schools need more staff - not less. Therefore I agree that apart from those buildings in urgent need it would be best to 'make do and mend' for now.
