Ever wondered what crimes have happened near your street? And how often? Perhaps you're thinking of buying a new home and are wondering where the safest parts of Burgess Hill might be...either way, the police crime map may interest you. The map highlights the number of Burgess Hill crimes in a month, what they were and roughly where they occurred.

According to this map, in December 2010 there were 152 crimes and anti-social behaviour offences committed in Burgess Hill in total. This figure is made up from eight burgularly offences, 72 anti-social behaviour incidents, one robbery, 13 vehicle crimes, 13 violent crimes and 45 'other' crimes.

Where did they happen? Take a look at the map here. Of the eight burglaries, three were near London Road, three to the West of Burgess Hill and two to the East. Anti-social behaviour seems fairly evenly spread with some hotspots, notably the town centre. The one robbery occurred near Wivelsfield Station. Vehicle crimes happened more in the south-west of the town as a general trend and violent crimes (which include common assault, harassment and Grievous Bodily Harm) were mostly near the town centre. The 45 'other' crimes include offences such as shoplifting, drug offences and criminal damage and you can see where they occurred here.

How does crime in Burgess Hill appear to compare to neighbouring towns? Well, Haywards Heath had a total of 285 crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents in the same month. Look closer though, and 222 of these were related to anti-social behaviour. There were less burglaries, vehicle crimes and 'other' crimes than in Burgess Hill. Haywards Heath had the same number of robberies and one more violent crime that month compared to Burgess Hill. Lewes could not be found on the police map but Crawley had a total of 482 crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents in December.

So far, December is the most recent month to view and it will be interesting to see what January and February show.

What are your thoughts on this map? Are the figures as expected or a surprise to you?

I, personally, would prefer not to see the police force cut by such vast numbers as predicted and see the money spent on keeping force numbers up than spent on - what could be scare-mongering - such as this.
