Sussex Police have issued a warning from users of AGMs after three suspicious devices were found on cash machines in a week.
The devices were attached to cash machines in Church Road, Burgess Hill and also Keymer Road, Hassocks. The one in Church Road was attached to the ‘hole in the wall’ at Barclays Bank.
PCSO Emma Collet said: “If you have used your card in these machines recently, please check your bank statements carefully. If there are any unknown transactions, please contact your bank as soon as possible.
“When using ATM machines, please be vigilant of those around you. Check the machine before you proceed to use it, ensuring no foreign objects are stuck to it. If you see anything suspicious, report it straight to the bank and do not use the machine. If the bank is closed, call the police.”
The devices – described as looking like they were homemade - were noticed by members of the public and it is not yet known whether any bank accounts were affected.
Sussex Police advise:
Use ATMs where you feel most comfortable.
If possible, avoid using an ATM after dark. If you must, choose one that is well lit and does not have tall bushes nearby.
Avoid using the ATM if there are any suspicious-looking individuals around.
Be especially cautious when strangers offer to help you at an ATM, even if you are experiencing difficulty with the transaction.
Never allow anyone to distract you while you are at the ATM.
If you feel the ATM is not working normally, press the 'Cancel' key and withdraw your card (and use another ATM).
Do not be in a hurry during the transaction and carefully secure your card and cash in your wallet, handbag or pocket before leaving the ATM.
As you leave, be aware of anything suspicious. If you think you are being followed go to an area with a lot of people and call the police.
